Over the past few years, Apple has changed its methods to improve its biometric user experience. We’ve seen Apple use the physical home button, Touch ID, and the Face ID 3D facial recognition solution. In the current iPhone product line, only the Apple iPhone SE still retains the Home button. However, it looks like this situation will change soon.
There are reports that Apple updated the demo image of a patent linked to a side fingerprint two years ago. The new demo image now shows an iPhone-like style rather than the old flat shape. To put it simply, the image shows the three states of the lock screen to be unlocked, waiting to be unlocked, then unlocked, then after unlocking.
The patent clearly mentions that the device integrates the power button with the fingerprint recognition sensor. Since the current iPad Air 4 has already launched the side fingerprint, there is reason to believe that the iPhone and other iPad products will follow soon. There is almost no doubt that the iPhone SE has finally ditched the Home button. As the cheapest model in Apple’s mobile phone product line, the side fingerprints also help it cut costs and separate it from the iPhone digital product line. According to Kuo Ming-Chi, Apple is still testing fingerprint sensors under the screen.
Of course, we don’t expect this next Apple iPhone with a side-mounted fingerprint sensor to be a flagship. If Apple is to use this solution, it will likely be on its cheaper iPhone SE series. Maybe the iPhone SE 3 will have this feature.
IPhone 12 series sales exceed 100 million units
A new report from Counterpoint Research reveals that sales of the iPhone 12 series now exceed 100 million units. This is the first iPhone supercycle since the iPhone 6, which is a wave of massive replacements. In fact, the iPhone 12 series broke the 100 million unit mark in April of this year. This shows that the goal was reached within 7 months of the device’s release. The iPhone 11, released in 2019, had a sales volume of over 100 million and took 9 months. The iPhone 6 that year was less than 7 months old, with sales exceeding 100 million. That year, the high sales volume of the iPhone 6 was due to the larger screen. This time on iPhone 12, consumers mainly like new features like 5G network and OLED display. In the iPhone 12 series, the Pro Max model is the first choice of many customers. It has accumulated a 29% market share, while the iPhone 11 Pro Max has a 25% market share.
