Soon you will be able to buy cars equipped with fingerprint readers, allowing you to unlock the doors and start the engine.
Hyundai has announced that the technology will initially be available on its 2019 Santa Fe SUV, although it will only offer this particular feature in selected (as yet unknown) markets in the first quarter of 2019 before making it more widely available.
Fingerprint sensors are located on the door handles and on the ignition button, and Hyundai says it’s much more secure than a traditional car key.
The company says the risk of confusing another person’s fingerprint with that of the actual driver is 1 in 50,000, making it five times more effective than conventional vehicle keys, including smart keys. .
The more the sensor is used, the better it will detect the driver’s digits and make sure he is trying to access the vehicle.
More than just open and go
The unlock and engine start functions are just a few of the advantages of fingerprint technology, as it can also be used to create profiles for different users.
This allows the vehicle to automatically adjust seat positions, connected car functionality, and mirror angles to meet a driver’s particular needs.
Hyundai Research and Development Head Albert Biermann said there are “plans to further expand the application of the technology to enable adjustment of temperature, steering wheel position and many other features. which will be adapted to the preferences of the driver “.
It’s not yet clear whether the technology will be a standard feature or an optional (potentially expensive) add-on, but we should find out more soon.
