Facial biometrics have been around for many years. Facial authentication is a subset of facial biometrics that only allows a 1: 1 match of a face for authentication. The problem with this has always been that there is a database with a person’s face to associate with, and if there is a database there is Personal Identifying Information (PII) and the ability to modify the database.
The Kampr Systems reader family takes facial biometrics to the next level to create a secure Zero Trust ID. A secure identifier is different from a traditional or even biometric badge. It requires the system to guarantee the trust of the person accessing a door. The Zero Trust model assumes a violation and checks every request as if it came from an insecure identifier. To do this, the credentials must verify trust each time with the credentials. The Kampr K9 is a true edge device, requiring no on-premise server for authentication.
The Kampr Systems K9i reader solves three access control problems:
# 1) K9i offers secure credentials:
- Secure Registration – During registration, the ID holder will stand in front of a Kampr Systems registration reader where a series of scans will be performed. These scans take less than a minute. The referenced data points captured and analyzed by the K9r 3D camera as mathematical values which are then encrypted to become a Secure Identifier (SCID). The stored data is not a photograph or part of the unique and identifiable characteristics of a person’s image. There is no facial data held in the SCID, making it impossible to reverse engineer mathematics to Personally Identifiable Information (PII). The SCID is then sent to the Kampr Systems cloud where the most secure access control identifier offered, a 48-bit identifier, is generated. This 48-bit identifier is known as the Facial Identifier (FID). When the ID holder stands in front of the Kampr Systems K9i, the reader will read the face several times in less than a second and check it against the known FID. If the person is valid, access is granted. If the person is not, access is denied. Since the Kampr Systems family of readers can read multiple faces in the field of view, if one face in the field of view is unreliable; no access will be granted, even if trusted faces are in line of sight.
- Data Science, Not Another Video Analysis – Kampr Systems K9i drives are built with Intel 3D cameras, on-board hardware accelerators, and proprietary encoding in a compact package. Traditionally, facial biometrics have used either the Open Network Video Interface Forum (ONVIF) compatible camera performing facial biometric analysis, or a near infrared camera, both of which create a database of points. By incorporating the Intel 3D camera, the Kampr Systems K9i player brings cutting-edge stereo depth technology where the liveliness and micro-features unique to each person’s face are captured. 3D cameras work without compression, allowing the system to detect even the smallest of changes, preventing even identical twins from fooling the reader.
- Secure Communication – The Kampr Systems K9i reader offers standard Open Supervised Device Protocol (OSDP), Wiegand or RIO connectivity, allowing connectivity to any access control system. Since the K9i reader connects as another secure reader to any access control system, the K9i can be programmed into the system as a multi-factor authentication (MFA) device, allowing a combination of secure credentials. As a stand-alone Zero Trust secure identification platform, no API is required to communicate between the reader and the access control system. The reader is connected to the Edge processing unit mounted on the secure side of the door. This control panel has both OSDP and IP connectivity allowing the reader to communicate access control panel and securely to Kampr Systems Cloud for system updates only. The Edge processing unit has an on-board Form C relay to trigger third-party integration. In the event of a network failure, a copy of the FID is stored locally. Once the network connection is reestablished, all updated cardholder FIDs will automatically be sent to the reader.
# 2) K9i creates ease of entry:
Many companies have a line of employees who must scan a badge reader to enter a building. To do this, they must find a badge, get out of the traffic lane and stop in front of the reader. The Kampr Systems K9i reader has a second reader which is mounted inside the secure area, the K9v (verification reader). The K9v is installed inside the secure area as a dependent reader where the K9v reader communicates through the K9i requiring only one reader license for both readers.
The K9v reader is triggered when the K9i reader allows access. Once access is granted, the K9v scans faces as the door opens. If a person tries to enter a door, the K9v reader will trigger an alarm in the form of an SMS, email or system generated alert of the unauthorized person who managed to enter.
On its own, the K9i reader can identify potential tailgating scenarios through both system settings and trained artificial intelligence (AI). Even if the K9v is not installed, the K9i reader can trigger an alarm for a possible tailgating scenario.
