The LiDAR scanners included in the iPad / iPhone have made Apple the only device capable of delivering high-quality 3D scans at a low cost, and the ecosystem around it has just exploded. Additionally, LiDAR / ToF dramatically improves AR.
By not including a compatible ToF sensor, Samsung has effectively eliminated itself from any environment that could use scanning or AR. Congratulation!

It’s a shame, the TOF sensor was exceptionally useful for photogrammetry
Myself, I don’t really see the point of using ToF 3D other than for portrait photography. Maybe there is a good use of ToF 3D with AR, but AR itself is not that popular.
Don’t copy what Apple is doing, it’s that easy.
The moral of the story is never to copy Apple’s bad choices!

There is a whole world of real productive applications possible with the time-of-flight sensor, which were also in the works.
Samsung in the first place had made it difficult to use by programming the earlier time-of-flight camera that it had in his phone and was the main reason there weren’t many use cases.
Without TOF, it will simply move those apps to Sony and Apple.
I’ve always bought Samsung, but now I’m going to switch to Apple because it’s bad vision and poor execution.

With the current use of depth sensors, 3D ToF is unnecessary, moreover the laser rangefinder is also a ToF.
There are MANY uses for a high resolution ToF, the problem is that they won’t be implemented until there is one.
Low resolution ToF and LiDAR in general are good for industrial uses, scanning, spatial localization and 3D navigation, but when it comes to art (photography) they are NOT suitable at all, but the industrial type is the only one available, it does not mean that they are the best for this use.
Also, technically it doesn’t have 10k or 30k lasers, it is often a single laser or laser grating passing through a diffraction grating.
The point is that the technology that shoots many rays is not suitable for what smartphones do and should do, ToF / LiDAR Flash is a much more suitable technology, as it essentially emits a single bright flash, which often comes from ” a laser whose beam has been widened, or an LED (although the Laser has many advantages), and collect, per pixel, the delay or phase shift, which gives much better performance than identifying each point, because you now have a data table containing a sync for each pixel, and the resolution of your depth map is limited by the resolution of your sensor and not by the number of points.
Well, technically it’s not called “Flash LiDAR” because all non-digitized LiDARs are Flash LiDARs.
But the name is so messed up in this area that it would do the trick.
It is not “Single Photon” per se as other technologies can achieve this result, but it is one of the ones I am talking about:
Here the sensor has a low resolution because it is an experiment, but it can be significantly increased.

Huawei has or is currently beating Google services. Their only concern is the processor.
Samsung in the camera department has a competitor at Sony, so there will always be competition. And just because they don’t use their own technology doesn’t mean they don’t innovate and show up in other phones, take GN2 and their last mentioned ToF sensor.
I love the tof on my 10+ note.
I’m curious why no one is using the ToF sensor on the Nokia 9 Pureview. This apparently had the best ToF sensor on any smartphone.
