- Samsung is reportedly sticking with side fingerprint scanners for its 2022 foldables.
- The company has reportedly considered adding an in-display fingerprint sensor to its upcoming foldables.
Samsung has long stuck to side-mounted fingerprint scanners for its foldable phones, with the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3 also adopting this type of fingerprint scanner. Now, news from Korea suggests that the 2022 foldables will also stay there.
BusinessKorea reports that Samsung was planning to add an in-display fingerprint sensor to the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4. However, the manufacturer recently decided not to use this technology on new devices and will instead use scanners side fingerprints.
These wouldn’t have been the first foldables with in-display fingerprint sensors, as the upcoming Vivo X Fold will reportedly have in-display scanners on both the smartphone and the foldable display.
Do you want in-display or side fingerprint scanners on foldables?
Still, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner still makes a lot of sense on a foldable phone. This option allows users to easily unlock their phone in both closed and open states, requiring only a single fingerprint reader in the first place.
We still have a long way to go before we hit the traditional Q3 launch window for Samsung’s foldables. But we will undoubtedly see more Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 leaks before then.
