Contactless biometric technologies were in demand long before the pandemic, and contactless fingerprint scanning is increasingly accepted as effective, as evidenced by guidelines from the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology this year. Fingerprint biometrics are also being adopted in an ever-growing variety of systems and applications, including physical and logical access control, but limited only by the imagination of developers.

An underserved market

While contactless fingerprint biometrics have advanced significantly in recent years, Brown says the market has so far been dominated by four-finger scanners, with no finger scanners available.

This despite the fact that one-finger applications remain by far the most common type, and the one-finger scanners from FAP10 to FAP30 continue to sell more than other traditional biometric fingerprint scanners. They are the scanners most likely to be used in authentication scenarios in the workplace, enrollment stations, and other high traffic multi-user environments.

To meet this need, the company developed the Hamster Air, which Mr. Brown says is a compact, reliable and affordable contactless biometric fingerprint scanner unlike anything it knows on the market.

“The feedback we have received is that the partners want to offer their customers a contactless alternative to a standard ‘touch’ fingerprint reader,” explains the vice president. “The applications for a contactless fingerprint reader like the Hamster Air are pretty much the same as for older touch readers. “

This means not only a wide range of existing applications, but also a growing range, as developers integrate biometrics into more systems to improve security, add personalization, or facilitate user experiences.

The global fingerprint sensor market is expected to grow further by more than 10% per year, and the contactless biometrics market is expected to experience dramatic growth over the next few years, reaching $ 18.6 billion in five years or so. $ 27.6 billion in six, according to a pair of recent market reports.

Mature technology

Integrating contactless fingerprint technology with existing systems can pose challenges, and Brown notes that SecuGen recommends re-enrolling with the device to maximize accuracy.

While the NIST Fingerprint Image Quality (NFIQ) 2.0 algorithm was designed for use with older touch fingerprint systems, research indicates that it may be effective in assessing the quality of contactless prints.

The transition to contactless fingerprint biometrics has also become easier than ever, as the technology and understanding of it continues to evolve.

“The integration of Hamster Air is not much different from the integration of any of our other fingerprint readers,” he says. “The SDK provides APIs for capturing images, extracting models, and matching models. A software developer can easily integrate the use of Hamster Air into their software.

With an increasing body of research and technical advice, as well as standards under development, contactless fingerprint biometrics are poised for further adoption.
