The sawmill scanning experts at JoeScan have been hard at work developing next-generation scanners for more machining centers and will soon bring the proven simplicity of their JS-50 scanhead to more parts of the sawmill. JoeScan will debut several new scanners at the TP&EE show in Portland, Oregon, September 28-30.

Precise rotation of the logs before the first stage of processing is decisive for obtaining a high value recovery. With its optimization software, LINCK uses 3D scan data to generate an optimized cutting pattern, then determines the angle required for the rotation of the logs. With Log Motion Control, LINCK takes a new step in the development of this technology. A Microtec Truespin scanner is used where a camera registers a characteristic pattern on the surface of the log and where the position of the log is transmitted during the whole rotation process. The software determines the true rotational position of the log to compare with the theoretical position. Any deviation is compensated by immediately adjusting the position of the rotating rollers.

MiCROTEC’s Logeye 900 Stereo features a stereoscopic imaging system providing a full 360 degree scan of a log as it rolls into the cart, headrig or end dogger. Since the sweep takes place as it is transferred into position, the log is already fully optimized and ready to saw as soon as it is pressed down. This leads to higher throughput speeds and significantly improved recovery, as the entire log surface is imaged without shadows or occlusions. The scanner is also able to detect the current rotation of the log at any point in the process, allowing full rotation optimization and bend correction, a feature previously only possible on scan lines of linear logs.

Prologic+ has teamed up with Finnos, a specialist in X-ray scanners; Prologic+ specializes in log optimization and TrueShape scanners. Scan density is determined by the sensor of choice with typical resolutions in the range of ½ inch to 2 inches between slices. The SpaceScan is a self-contained, high power industrial light curtain system designed for the sawmill and wood products industry. Generating a dense infrared multi-beam light grid, the system offers a detection range of 10 meters with high excess gain and light immunity of 100,000 lux. The series is available in a wide range of detection heights, ranging from just 160mm to 2460mm, making it suitable for almost any application. The light curtains are housed in rugged aluminum extrusions that are fully sealed to an IP67 waterproof rating and are designed to withstand severe vibration, shock and misalignment.
