The Google Pixel 6 will not have a fingerprint sensor

If the recently leaked Pixel 6 images are anything to go by, it looks like the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro won’t have a fingerprint scanner.

For a very long time, that is to say since its first appearance, Google Pixel Phones have always used physical fingerprint scanners.

And they were always located in the back – the best position, IMHO.

The Pixel 4 used Google’s face unlock technology, but that was later canceled on the Pixel 5.

Google’s decision to remove face unlock on Pixel 5 was made to make room for more premium features inside the phone (at a lower price).

The Pixel 5 featured a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, just like the Pixel 3a and Pixel 4a.

But 2021 Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro could break with that tradition again, as you can see below.

As you can see in the Google Pixel 6 Photos Leaked, there is no physical fingerprint sensor on the front or back of the phone.

These images are not official images, of course, so it could simply be a mistake on the part of the renderer. But if it doesn’t – and it’s a very real possibility – it means the Pixel 6 will ship without it.

And that means it’ll either use an in-screen fingerprint sensor or, more likely, ditch fingerprint biometrics entirely and focus instead of face unlock, just like Apple iPhone 12 and iPhone 11.

We know that Google has face unlock technology at its disposal; he used it on the Pixel 4, for example, so it stands to reason that this is what he will use on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.

And because it’s been a few years since we’ve seen Face Unlock on a Pixel phone, it’s likely we’ll see some pretty big improvements in its performance.

Soniya Jobanputra, Product Manager for Team Pixel, told the PA News Agency in 2020 that face unlocking is not dead and will likely return at some point.

We’ve done a lot of work to bring this technology to life, so hopefully we’ll find a way to reuse the work that’s been done there because I think there are some wonderful innovations that we have in this feature, but it may not come again in the form that you saw in the past.

If the leaked images of the Pixel 6 are to be believed, it looks like Google’s MIA face unlock could make a comeback in 2021.
