The Withings Body Scan scale adds a sensor bar and goes far beyond measuring weight

Our health is not limited to our weight, nor to our muscles or our mobility. Health is, at least in part, a physical condition and that means your whole body – all of you. A typical scale can’t measure this, but Withing’s all-new Body Scan device, unveiled at CES 2022, can.

Withings Body Scan is a scale, but it is also a series of sensors integrated into the platform and a special attached bar that sits along the top edge of the scale. The weight measurement ends up being the least of what the Body Scan can do. It is so advanced, in fact, that the device is not yet approved for use in the United States. He’s waiting for FDA approval.

Why all this caution? This may be because of how the Body Scan works. To measure things like “segmental body composition” and even sweat gland activity, Body Scan sends out a low level and what Withings promises is a “safe” electrical signal from the sensors on the bar in your hands or the pad. under your feet to read things like impedance almost instantly. This measurement can tell you a lot about what is going on in the body.

Withings claims it can learn things like body fat distribution, water percentage, and muscle imbalances, which is why similar health measurement systems are so popular with sports professionals.

Measuring sweat glands in the feet allows the Body Scan to track the activity of small nerves, giving you a sudomotor reading (autonomic nervous system check of sweat gland activity).

All sensors also offer some of the more traditional biometric data including heart rate, 6-lead ECG recordings for detecting arrhythmias and measurement of vascular age (arterial health). Withings claims that Body Scan’s algorithms can detect heart rhythm patterns associated with atrial fibrillation.

Body Scan includes a 3.2 inch color screen where you can see most of these results, but the device also connects to the Withings app on iOS or Android where you can see everything in detail.

As noted above, Withings Body Scan is still awaiting FDA clearance, but they plan to start shipping it in the second half of 2022. The price has not been set.

Devices capable of measuring all kinds of health parameters are not unusual. We’re definitely seeing a lot of new wearable devices that can read everything from your stress level to heart rate. However, a scale that also puts something in your hands to measure not only what it can glean from your wrists is something new. The level of detail – the readings of individual body parts, including your arms, legs, and torso – that the Body Scan can potentially track is also unprecedented.

It will be interesting to see how the Withings Body Scan passes the FDA approval process and how it ultimately measures up against all of the new health products coming out of CES 2022.
