Updated PolyWorks Interface Released for Hexagon Structured Light Scanners – Metrology and Quality News


Hexagon’s Manufacturing Intelligence division has announced the release of a new, updated version of its dedicated software plugin for the powerful PolyWorks third-party inspection software platform. Initially launched in October 2020, the SLS-PW plugin enables full operation of Hexagon structured light scanning systems directly within the PolyWorks environment. This latest release includes a range of new features, including expanded exhibit functionality, an updated graphical user interface, and workflow tools based on the PolyWorks macro scripting language.

The SLS-PW breaks new ground in the structured light scanning (SLS) technology market with its deep integration of structured light scanner operability integration into a third-party metrology software platform. Alternative SLS solutions usually require a separate dedicated software platform to run the scanner, which then needs to export the data into metrology software. With SLS-PW, this tedious process is eliminated, which greatly improves the productivity of the measurement process.

“The unavoidable requirement for proprietary stand-alone measurement software has long been a problem faced by users of structured light scanning technology from Hexagon and other manufacturers,” says Dirk Rieke-Zapp, Sales Manager for Structured Light Scanner Products at Hexagon. “For PolyWorks users, this should no longer be a problem thanks to SLS-PW. The adoption of the plugin since its release last year has been very successful and user feedback overwhelmingly positive. With this new version, we offer a more refined version, with the goal of making high quality 3D scanning as easy as possible.

A key area of ​​improvement in the new version of the plug-in is compatibility with PolyWorks workflow macros. These will now be more easily usable with Hexagon SLS systems, with the plugin now including elements to guide users in creating their own macros. While users can already use macro scripts to improve the scanning workflow, sample code has been added to the plugin to kick start users’ efforts and make this important tool for improving productivity more accessible.

Capturing data on more difficult measurement objects with non-uniform reflection has also been simplified with better handling of the scanner’s exposure functionality, while scanner and turntable support for measurement in multiple parts is also now more accessible. Fine-tuning of the SLS-PW graphical user interface and workflows has made integrating the scanner into the PolyWorks environment even more seamless, saving clicks and scanning time.

Hexagon’s line of structured light scanners remains fully compatible and supported by the dedicated OptoCat structured light scanning software solution, which was until now required to operate these systems. The SLS-PW plugin is for users already invested in the popular PolyWorks environment and who would see significant productivity improvements by being able to switch to a single software solution.
